Svar från H&M!

Med anledning av vårt (SSU:s och S-studenters) pressmeddelande tidigare idag - se bloggen nedan - skickade vi ett brev till H&M:s ansvarige för Corporate Social Responsibility. Vi fick följande svar tidigare ikväll:

Vi känner naturligtvis väl till problemen på River Rich och har i flera månader arbetat aktivt för att de ska lösas. Vårt första möte med facket på River Rich skedde redan i slutet av november förra året. Jag besökte själv fabriken i mars i år och diskuterade igenom problemen med ledningen. Då fick jag löfte om att ett trettiotal fackligt aktiva personer skulle återanställas i april. Sedan dess har något gått fel och vi har fått olika versioner av händelserna. Jag har idag sökt Neil Kearney för att höra ITGLWF:s syn på läget. Jag kan föräkra att H&M tar frågan på största allvar.

Jag passar på att bifoga det brev till Kambodjas premiärminister vilket H&M var med om att underteckna nyligen, där vi uttrycker oro för begränsningar av fackföreningsfrihet i Kambodja.

As international companies sourcing product out of Cambodia, we are quite concerned about what appears to be a pattern of violence against union leaders in the country. The recent death of Hy Vuthy, President of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC) at the Suntex Factory, has been brought to our attention, following on the heels of attacks against a number of other union leaders last year and the deaths of two union leaders in 2004.

It is of the utmost importance to us as buyers that rule of law be swift, just, and transparent. This ensures a business environment in which workers can freely exercise their right to freedom of association without fear of retaliation. It also ensures a stable business environment for us to continue to source our products.

We urge the Cambodian authorities to thoroughly and independently investigate Hy Vuthy’s death and bring those responsible to justice. We also encourage the government to take all necessary measures to prevent any acts of violence against union leaders or members and to ensure that all unions are equally regarded and protected in Cambodia.

We appreciate the opportunity to communicate with you on this important issue and look forward to seeing tangible progress by Cambodian authorities on the matter.
